The housing stipend and the cancellation clause are one decision.
Housing is usually the biggest single piece of a travel package, and it's the piece most exposed if the contract ends early. Here's how the two interact, and what travelers describe confirming before they sign a lease. Educational only.
Run your offer through the calculator →A housing stipend is only worth what it covers where you're actually going. Two offers can quote the same stipend, and one can leave you comfortably ahead while the other doesn't cover rent. And if the contract is cancelled, a lease you signed on the strength of the stipend doesn't cancel with it.
What the stipend actually has to cover
Test the stipend against real rent in the specific market, not an average. Short-term and mid-term furnished rentals near a facility often cost more than a standard lease, and utilities, deposits and pet fees come out of the same number.
- What does a furnished, month-to-month place near this facility actually rent for right now?
- Does the stipend cover deposits, utilities and any pet fees, or just base rent?
- Is any part of the housing stipend prorated if I miss hours?
What this can cost
If a stipend that looked generous doesn't cover the local furnished rate, the gap comes out of your taxable pay every week of the contract.
Cancellation exposure on a lease
The riskiest combination is a longer lease against a contract that can end early. If the assignment is cancelled, you can be left holding rent with no stipend coming in.
- Can I rent month-to-month, or is a longer lease required?
- If the contract is cancelled early, does the agency contribute anything toward housing already committed?
- How much notice would I get before a cancellation?
Example — illustrative composite
How the exposure adds up
A thirteen-week assignment, a three-month furnished lease signed up front, and a low-census clause that allows early cancellation with short notice. If the contract ends in week three, the remaining lease is still owed — with no stipend arriving to offset it. Figures depend entirely on your lease and market; this is an illustrative composite, not a real case.
What to ask in writing
Can we align the lease term to the contract, and can the agency confirm in writing what happens to committed housing if the assignment is cancelled early?
